Pau Gasol, forward for the LA Lakers, will be out for the next six to eight weeks after tearing his plantar fascia in a win against the Brooklyn Nets. Gasol has been suffering from plantar fasciitis for the entire season but Tuesday night’s game proved to be a challenge for Gasol. Gasol noticed that something was different during the first half and by the second half, his plantar fascia was really hurting him.  During the last few minutes of the game, Gasol claims that he felt a pop in his foot while blocking a shot and with three minutes and fifty seconds left in the game, Gasol asked to go to the locker room with the team medic.

Plantar Fasciitis, otherwise known as heel pain, is a very serious condition that affects many people and if not treated properly as in Gasol’s case, could lead to a tear of the Plantar Fascia. The Plantar Fascia is a band of tissue on the bottom of your foot that helps to maintain the arch of your foot. People who work on their feet a lot or athletes who do a lot of running can develop an overuse injury called Plantar Fasciitis. One of the tell-tale signs of Plantar Fasciitis is pain on the bottom of your heel and becomes worse with the first few steps you take when you wake up in the morning.

If you are experiencing symptoms of heel pain, you should get to your local New Iberia Podiatrist to check it out. Plantar Fasciitis can usually be treated conservatively with custom made orthotics and some anti-inflammatory medications. Surgery is usually a last resort option when conservative measures fail. Minor tears of the plantar fascia will initially be treated conservatively. More severe tears or minor tears that don’t respond to conservative injuries will usually require surgery.

Gasol isn’t going to let this injury keep him down, the LA Lakers forward tweeted “I am hoping to recover ASAP so I can be back with the team and keep fighting.” We here at The Foot Clinic in New Iberia wish Pau Gasol a speedy recovery so that he can return to the courts with the LA Lakers. If you or a loved one is also experiencing symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis or any other common foot injuries, make an appointment and we will help you get back on your feet!
